For much of its history the Vernon Arena was a "pavilion"—an outdoor boxing ring surrounded by seating for spectators—but the Vernon Coliseum, which stood from 1924 to 1927, was an indoor arena with capacity to host about 8,000 people.
The 80,000 square feet (7,400 m 2) UC Riverside Student Recreation Center (SRC) opened on January 11, 1994. In 2010, students voted to expand the SRC with funding from their student services' fees. Planning and construction took place over the course of the next four years (2010-2014) with the renovated facility opening on October 3, 2014.
