Ahold, originally named Albert Heijn N.V., started in 1887 when Albert Heijn bought the general store of his father in the Dutch town of Oostzaan. He gave the store his name and transformed it into a modern specialized grocery together with his wife, Neeltje Heijn. After a few years, he owned a chain of Dutch stores.
On 1 January 2022 there were 6.390 supermarkets in the Netherlands. A 4.4 percent increase over the previous year (2021). [ 1 ] In number of stores, Albert Heijn is the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands followed by Jumbo and PLUS.
Albert Heijn was born in Oostzaan on the 15th of October 1865, the son of Jan Heijn and Antje de Ridder. His parents ran a successful store in the town. [1] On 27 May 1887, he married Neeltje de Ridder. [2] On the same day, he took over his parents' store. The supermarket chain founded by his grandson Albert Jr. still carries the Albert Heijn name.
