The Graduate Program in History at the University of Pennsylvania has a long tradition of distinction. One of the first programs in the United States to offer doctoral training in history (first Ph.D. conferred in 1891), the Department continues to be a leader.

The Undergraduate Program. The History Major is one of the largest on the Penn campus. Majors may choose to concentrate by regional or thematic area, or follow a general curriculum. The Department encourages history majors to study abroad, and supports research with both funding and awards.
