The school is one of three state high schools for highly capable students in Queensland; the others are the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries and Queensland Academy for Health Sciences. The school has a small village atmosphere at its 5-hectare (12-acre) campus on the edge of the Dividing Range, and has developed a variety of facilities on its East Toowoomba location. These include three sporting ovals, an outdoor 25 metres (82 ft) swimming pool, a multipurpose court, and the St Aidans School Chapel.
The school was established on 1 January 1982 [5] as Christian Outreach College Toowoomba at the back of Highlands Church, [6] [1] which was founded in 1978. [ 7 ] The school changed its name from Christian Outreach College Toowoomba to Highlands Christian College on 21 January 2019.
Toowoomba was also popular as a summer retreat for the colony's elite. It was declared a city (the City of Toowoomba) in 1904 and by 1911 had a population of 10,636. [2] [3] [4] [1] Toowoomba was an early centre for education, with the area's first National School (later Toowoomba South State School) opening in 1865. [5]
