The AMC Matador is a series of American automobiles that were manufactured and marketed by American Motors Corporation (AMC) across two generations, from 1971 through 1973 (mid-size) and 1974 until 1978 (full-size), in two-door hardtop (first generation) and coupe (second generation) versions, as well as in four-door sedan and station wagon body styles.
In 1956, the plant continued to assemble the Nash and Hudson Rambler (4-door sedans and wagons) and the Nash Canadian Statesman (4-door sedan), but the Hudson Wasp was imported. That same year, American Motors (Canada) Limited was formed – taking over Nash Motors of Canada Limited and Hudson Motors of Canada Limited.

The name for the cars was taken from Lerma, a city in the state of Mexico, where VAM engines were manufactured. [1]The Mexican-made Lerma was a unique hybrid since it used a chassis and some body panels from the AMC Concord sedan, but the rear of the car featured the AMC Spirit's hatchback design. [2]
