Bates College (/ b eɪ t s /) [7] is a private liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine, United States. Anchored by the Historic Quad , the campus of Bates totals 813 acres (329 ha). It maintains 600 acres (240 ha) of nature preserve known as the " Bates-Morse Mountain " near Campbell Island and a coastal center on Atkins Bay .

Bates participates in laying of the Ivy at graduations and induction ceremonies [31] while Bowdoin participates in "Ivies", a weekend event usually in the spring marked with parties and inductions. [32] From its inception, Bates College served as an alternative to a more traditional and historically conservative Bowdoin College.
Historic Quad, also known as the Historic Quadrangle, in Lewiston, Maine, is a grassy area of 22.4 acres (9.1 ha) enclosed by fences with five garnet gates.It is the oldest part of the Bates College campus, [1] and serves as its historic center as well as the site of annual commencement exercises and other convocations.

The debate society's origins trace back to the Maine State Seminary, predating Bates College establishment. It was officially recognized in 1869 when the State of Maine granted charters to the Polymnian and Eurosophian Societies, early debating and literary groups at Bates. Women began participating in debates at Bates in the 1870s. [5]
Thomas Hedley Reynolds (November 23, 1920 – September 22, 2009) was an American historian and university professor who served as the fifth President of Bates College from March 1967 to November 1989.
