Bates College (/ b eɪ t s /) [7] is a private liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine, United States. Anchored by the Historic Quad , the campus of Bates totals 813 acres (329 ha). It maintains 600 acres (240 ha) of nature preserve known as the " Bates-Morse Mountain " near Campbell Island and a coastal center on Atkins Bay .

Bates participates in laying of the Ivy at graduations and induction ceremonies [31] while Bowdoin participates in "Ivies", a weekend event usually in the spring marked with parties and inductions. [32] From its inception, Bates College served as an alternative to a more traditional and historically conservative Bowdoin College.
Thomas Hedley Reynolds (November 23, 1920 – September 22, 2009) was an American historian and university professor who served as the fifth President of Bates College from March 1967 to November 1989.
The debate society's origins trace back to the Maine State Seminary, predating Bates College establishment. It was officially recognized in 1869 when the State of Maine granted charters to the Polymnian and Eurosophian Societies, early debating and literary groups at Bates. Women began participating in debates at Bates in the 1870s. [5]
He was an early benefactor of the college. [ 1 ] In 1875, prior to the completion of Garcelon Field, Bates played Tufts at a field adjacent to Rand Hall on the Bates campus for the first organized intercollegiate football game played in Maine.
The college has partnerships with businesses and industry organizations, both locally and internationally [5] The student body and employees are involved in public events, hosted at Bates and throughout the community, including an annual Veterans Day Celebration, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, and a Disability Awareness Day.
The history of Bates College began shortly before Bates College's founding on March 16, 1855, in Lewiston, Maine. [note 1] The college was founded by Oren Burbank Cheney and Benjamin Bates. [2] Originating as a Free Will Baptist institution, it has since secularized and established a liberal arts curriculum.
