Belk was founded in 1888 by William Henry Belk in Monroe, North Carolina, outside Charlotte. The store was first called New York Racket and then Belk Brothers, after Belk made his brother, physician John Belk, his partner. Richland Mall opened on November 2, 1961 as the first mall in Columbia. [2] It was an open-air mall, typical of first-generation malls from the mid-twentieth century, and anchored by J.B. White, a major department store based in Augusta, Georgia, that was prevalent in South Carolina. A movie theater was also on a southeastern outlot of the mall.
Burdines ultimately entered the mall by taking over the Maas Brothers store a year later. Dillard's bought the Belk-Lindsey store in 1992. [7] Casual Corner, Off The Wall, and Chess King all closed in 1996. [8] A food court was added in 1998. [9] In 2001, Dillard's relocated from the former Belk to the former Montgomery Ward. [10]

Located on West Ehringhaus Street ( US 17 Business ) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina , the mall is currently anchored by Belk and until its closing in early April 2015; JCPenney .
