Griffin is a city in and the county seat of Spalding County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 23,478. Griffin was founded in 1840 and named for landowner Col. Lewis Lawrence Griffin. [4]

The Griffin Commercial Historic District, in Griffin, Georgia, is a 28 acres (11 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It included 93 contributing buildings, two contributing structures, and a contributing site. The district is roughly bounded by Central Alley, Sixth, Taylor and Eighth Streets.
It is a two-story painted-brick building. It was built by David Demarest (1811-1879), who also built the NRHP-listed Greene County Courthouse in Greensboro, Georgia. [2] Lewis Lawrence Griffin Historical Marker. The building is on the corner of 5th Street and Broad Street. Constructed in 1859 for $12,000, it was located by the railroad tracks.

Griffin–Spalding County Airport was built in 1939. [3] Despite the relatively short length of its then 3,100-foot-long (940 m) runway, Griffin's airport hosted various large piston aircraft including the Douglas DC-3 and the Aviation Traders Carvair, a cargo conversion of the DC-4 from the 1970s until the 1990s.
