Thomson Davis was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, and was three years old when her family moved to Balornock, a district in the city of Glasgow. [1] [2] Brought up in the tenements of Springburn, she had an early ambition to be a writer, and after leaving school she worked at various short-term jobs while submitting her stories to magazines.

Thomas Hughes QC (20 October 1822 – 22 March 1896) was an English lawyer, judge, politician and author. He is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days (1857), a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes had attended. It had a lesser-known sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford (1861).
