The state of Oklahoma historically had civil townships.On August 5, 1913, voters passed the Oklahoma Township Amendment, also known as State Question 58. [1] This allowed the creation or abolishment of townships on a county by county basis; by the mid-1930s, all Oklahoma counties had voted to abolish them. [2]

Fairfax is a town in Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. The Osage Nation reservation is coterminous with the county. The population was 1,380 at the 2010 census, down 11.3 percent from the figure of 1,555 recorded in 2000. [4] It was the home of the ballerinas Maria and Marjorie Tallchief. [5]

The county's population was 21,115 in 1910 and increased to a high of 56,558 by 1930. [ 3 ] Railroads came to the area in 1900, when the St. Louis, Oklahoma and Southern Railway (later the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway or Frisco) built a line from Sapulpa, Oklahoma via Okmulgee to a place near the Red River .
