Shankleville is an unincorporated community in Newton County, Texas, United States, founded by James and Winnie Shankle and Stephen McBride. [1] [2] [3] It was founded as a Freedmen's town, [4] one of over 500 such "freedom colonies" [5] in Texas. [6]
It was a two-story wooden frame structure and was abandoned when the county seat moved to Newton in 1853. It was demolished in the 1920s. [3] The third and current courthouse was built in 1902, replacing one constructed in 1853, also in Newton. It was designed and built by William Martin and Peter Moodie in the Second Empire style.
