This vision grew as Hickory Grove started a satellite location in northern Mecklenburg County in 1995. As of August 2009, the church has grown to over 18,000 members and is the second largest Baptist church in North Carolina. Started in 1954 by Rev. Jack Hudson, the church grew from "29 members in a tar-paper building on Old Concord Road" [2] to 4800 members, the first church that large in the city, [3] and at its peak, 6400 members. The current building is a domed facility that includes a 3400-seat sanctuary.
