The portion of modern Route 53 between the West Redding section of Redding and Bethel center was the northern half of the Norwalk and Danbury Turnpike. This turnpike was chartered in 1795 and used part of modern US 7, modern Route 107, and Umpawaug Road to West Redding, then continued on modern Route 53.

The plan for the trail is to run from Norwalk, Connecticut, to Danbury, Connecticut, stretching about 38 miles (61 km) passing through Wilton, Redding, and Ridgefield. The trail currently consists of a 1.6 miles (2.6 km) section in Norwalk with the trailheads at Matthews Park and New Canaan Avenue (Connecticut route 136).
The road from Central Norwalk via New Canaan center to the New York state line was designated as State Highway 184 in 1922. Route 123 was commissioned in 1932 from the southern half of old Highway 184 (Norwalk to New Canaan) and a previously unnumbered road from there to the state line.

The Central or Midtown section of Norwalk, Connecticut is an urbanized area in roughly the geographic center of the city, north of the South Norwalk neighborhood and the Connecticut Turnpike. Wall Street, West Avenue and Belden Avenue are the main thoroughfares. It has also been called "Norwalk Center" or "Downtown Norwalk".
