The land that eventually became Wisconsin was transferred from British to American control with the 1783 signing of the Treaty of Paris. [1] It was an unorganized part of the Northwest Territory until 1802 when all of the land from St. Louis north to the Canadian border was organized as St. Clair County. [1]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 397 square miles (1,030 km 2), of which 318 square miles (820 km 2) is land and 79 square miles (200 km 2) (20%) is water. [8] It is the fifth-smallest county in Wisconsin by land area and fourth-smallest by total area. The west boundary is largely in Lake Winnebago.
