Giethoorn (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣitɦoːr(ə)n]) is a village in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands, with a population of 2,795 in 2020. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland , about 5 km (3.1 mi) southwest of Steenwijk .
Giethoorn and Dwarsgracht are picturesque due to their local structure (see above); many of the old farmhouses have been transformed into "second homes" where rich Dutchmen live during their holidays. In summer, most houses of the village are lit in the evening, which enables the Tourist Board to organise romantic guided boat tours.
Postal codes in the Netherlands, known as postcodes, are alphanumeric, consisting of four digits followed by two uppercase letters. The letters 'F', 'I', 'O', 'Q', 'U' and 'Y' were originally not used for technical reasons, but almost all existing combinations are now used as these letters were allowed for new locations starting 2005.
Nederland has a statistical entry, [1] and its own postal code. [5] Originally, it was only accessible by boat. In 1840, it was home to 182 people, and was a peat excavation village. The village was first mentioned in the 14th century. [3] The etymology is unclear. [4] Tuk was located on the main road from Friesland to the south, and travellers often stayed in the village, because the city gates of Steenwijk were closed at night. [5] In the 15th century, a chapel was constructed in the village. [6]
[4] [5] Rotsterhaule started as a peat excavation project and attracted many people from Overijssel and specifically the Giethoorn region. A chapel has been known to exist since 1490 and was demolished in 1580. In 1840, it was home to 379 people. In 1920, a little church was built which remained in operation until 1982. [6]
