In 1997, the team was renamed Gordon's Gin Boars. One of the most memorable shots in team history was Bal David's final second heave from half-court to defeat San Miguel Beer by two points. Gordon's Gin entered the finals of the All-Filipino against Purefoods Corned Beef. Purefoods managed to take a 3–1 series lead.

San Miguel won third place in all three conferences of the '97 campaign. The Beermen failed to enter the finals in the Commissioner's and Governors' Cups, respectively, losing in two do-or-die games against Gordon's Gin and Purefoods. Jeff Ward was the import during the second conference while Larry Robinson played for SMB in the third conference.
The Gordon's Gin Boars ended their six-year drought, winning over the Milkmen in 1997, giving playing coach Robert Jaworski his last PBA title on both capacities. [3] A year later, Alaska had Devin Davis as import to win the title over San Miguel.
Eventually, then PBA president Carlos "Honeyboy" Palanca III made a decision that was the most controversial and history-making move in the PBA. Palanca, owner of La Tondeña, Inc. which owns Gilbey's Gin (later Ginebra San Miguel) in the PBA, decided to take in Jaworski and best buddy Arnaiz to the team.
