These pier heads or landing wharves, at which ships were unloaded each consisted of a pontoon with four legs that rested on the sea bed to anchor the pontoon, yet allowed it to float up and down freely with the tide.

The Navy Pontoon opened new avenues of attack. The 2'x 175' sections could be carried on sides of LST's and could land on shallow water beaches. They also were used to form an easy to assemble "in theater" dry dock. The sections LSTs transported hanging on their sides could be used to form the bottom and sides of a dry dock.
