The 301st was reactivated in July 1972 as the 301st Tactical Fighter Wing at Carswell Air Force Base, Texas in the United States Air Force Reserve. Upon reactivation the wing was assigned the Republic F-105 Thunderchief , with the Carswell-based 457th Fighter Squadron using specially modified version of the F-105D called the "Thunderstick II".

The 301st's 457th Tactical Fighter Squadron flew the F-105 Thunderchief from 1972 to 1982. It transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II in 1981, then to the F-16 Fighting Falcon in 1990. The wing has participated in exercises, both within the United States and abroad.
McMahan is a staff sergeant in the 301st Fighter Wing medical squadron and a traditional reservist who is not actively participating in the unit, the command said.
