The airport is located in Burbank, and serves the heavily populated areas of northern Los Angeles County. It is the closest airport to the central and northeastern parts of L.A. (including Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles), Glendale, Pasadena, the San Fernando Valley, the Santa Clarita Valley, and the western San Gabriel Valley.

The airport started its conversion into a major passenger airport in 1946, and in 1949 became Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The current U-shaped terminal area was added in 1961 and expanded several times. LAX is the United States' second busiest airport (as of 2019) following Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

A new Burbank Airport–North station opened in 2018 to serve Antelope Valley Line passengers traveling to Hollywood Burbank Airport. The station is located near the intersection of San Fernando Boulevard and Hollywood Way, with a free shuttle bus for passengers to the airport terminal located approximately one mile away from the station site.
