In 1854, Rague moved to Dubuque, Iowa. While there, he designed a number of buildings, including the city hall, Central Market House, the jail and many homes such as the Mathias Ham House, and the Langworthy Octagon House. [3] Rague's style varied widely over his career from Neoclassical to Federalist to Late Victorian and even to Egyptian Revival.

In June 1891 the Dubuque Packing Company was founded by the merger of the Dubuque Packing & Provision Company and the Dubuque Butchers Association. [2] Until the early 1930s, the company acted as a local meat supplier. In 1931 H. W. Wahlert purchased the plant with the Christian Schmitt family of St. Louis.
