You can control what kinds of notifications you get (and how often) by updating your notifications preferences. To check your settings, click on "Preferences" in the fly-out (shown above) – or in the "All notifications" archive page. (You can also click on "preferences" in the top right of any page, then select the "Notifications" tab.)
User accounts created since May 2008 will be "unified" (that is, accessible from all Wikimedia projects). An older, non-unified account can be unified at Special:MergeAccount; unified users can use that page to check the status of their unified account. The Notifications tool (formerly code-named 'Echo') was released on the English Wikipedia on April 30, 2013. It aims to inform users about new activity on Wikipedia in a unified way and is designed to augment (rather than replace) the watchlist. To customise which notifications you receive, go to the Notifications tab of your preferences.
On the default skin, the button to restore default settings changes doesn't look like a button. On first glance, it looks like a warning explaining that the Save button will restore all settings to default! Adding a thin border around the button would make it far clearer that it's actually a separate button.
