Asia began in early 1981 after the apparent ending of Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, two of the founding bands of British progressive rock.After the breakup of King Crimson in 1974, various plans for a supergroup involving bassist John Wetton had not been successful, including the abortive British Bulldog project with Bill Bruford and Rick Wakeman in 1976.
He was a member of the band Family in 1971 for a short time, before joining King Crimson in 1972. [3] After the breakup of King Crimson at the end of 1974, Wetton played in a number of progressive rock and hard rock bands, including Roxy Music (1974–1975), Uriah Heep (1975–1976), U.K. (1977–1980), and Wishbone Ash (1980–1981). Carl Frederick Kendall Palmer (born 20 March 1950) [1] [2] is an English drummer. He was a founding member of the supergroups Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Asia, a touring drummer for The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and a founding member of Atomic Rooster.
The album features the former single, "Seasons Will Change," originally released by Asia Featuring John Payne in 2012. [7] Following the death of singer John Wetton and for clarity with the Downes-led Asia, Payne and Norlander decided these recordings should be as a new band. [8] Their second album, Freakshow, was released on 7 August 2020.
Following Asia lead singer John Wetton's death on 31 January 2017, Payne and Norlander formed Dukes of the Orient as a vehicle to release new material, both out of respect for Wetton, and to distinguish themselves from Payne's former band.
