In the 21st competition in 2018, there were 32 teams that represented Australia, Bulgaria, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United States, Thailand, and Vietnam. The first selection, usually in November, consist of a multiple-choice exam with 20 problems. One is given 5 points for each correct answer, 1 point for each unanswered problem and 0 point for a wrong answer. Approximately 10% of the competing students are selected for the second selection, which is held in January.
