Named in honour of Norris. James E. Norris (December 10, 1879 – December 4, 1952) was a Canadian - American businessman, operating companies in the grain and cattle industries, and owner of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League. He also had significant ownership interests in the Chicago Black Hawks and the New York Rangers.

The elevator and two surrounding outbuildings were listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
91000571 [1] Added to NRHP. May 17, 1991. The J. H. Hawes Elevator is a historic grain elevator located on 2nd Street in Atlanta, Illinois. The elevator was built in 1903 along the Illinois Midland Railroad; it was used to store locally farmed grain before the railroad shipped it to cities such as Peoria, Decatur, and Terre Haute, Indiana.
