Benedict the Moor OFM (Italian: Benedetto il Moro; 1526 – 4 April 1589) was a Sicilian Franciscan friar. Born of enslaved Africans in San Fratello , he was freed at birth and became known for his charity.
In 1883 a Black Catholic mission parish named after St. Benedict the Moor was established, based on a $5,000 bequest by Fr Thomas Farrell to serve the African-American community in Lower Manhattan; his will and testament specified that if the Catholic Church was unable to spend funds for this purpose, it would instead go to the Protestant Colored Orphan Asylum.
In the 1960s, St. Benedict's parish, established in 1889, merged with that parish and two others and the building became its church. The 18-foot tall statue of St. Benedict the Moor by Frederick Charles Shrady was installed atop its tower in 1968.
Tourists come to admire the church, stories are written in the press and donations are made to complete other buildings. A school is established for boys who have been in trouble with the law, just as the nuns wanted.
