The Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham, [3] informally known as the Slipper Chapel or the Chapel of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, is a Catholic basilica in Houghton Saint Giles, Norfolk, England. Built in 1340, it was the last chapel on the pilgrim route to Walsingham .
In 1424 it was purchased by Thomas Walsingham (died 1457) [3] a wealthy wine and cloth merchant in London and a Member of parliament. [4] He married Margaret [5] Bamme, daughter of Henry Bamme, of the City of London, a member of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. [6] Walsingham added additional land to the estate in 1433. [7]
