Operating systems supporting virtual memory assign processes a virtual address space and each process refers to addresses in its execution context by a so-called virtual address. To access data such as code or variables at that address, the process must translate the address to a physical address in a process known as virtual address translation.
A process can store data in memory-mapped files on memory-backed file systems, such as the tmpfs file system or file systems on a RAM drive, and map files into and out of the address space as needed. A set of processes may still depend upon the enhanced security features page-based isolation may bring to a multitasking environment.
The Intel IA-32 (x86) architecture allows a process to have up to 16,383 segments of up to 4GiB each. IA-32 segments are subdivisions of the computer's linear address space, the virtual address space provided by the paging hardware. [5] The Multics operating system is probably the best known system implementing segmented memory.
The sense of "process" (or task) is "something that takes up time", as opposed to "memory", which is "something that takes up space". [b] The above description applies to both processes managed by an operating system, and processes as defined by process calculi. If a process requests something for which it must wait, it will be blocked.
Memory management (also dynamic memory management, dynamic storage allocation, or dynamic memory allocation) is a form of resource management applied to computer memory. The essential requirement of memory management is to provide ways to dynamically allocate portions of memory to programs at their request, and free it for reuse when no longer needed.

Each new process gets its own user space. [1] Process creation in Windows is done through the CreateProcessA() system call. A new process runs in the security context of the calling process, but otherwise runs independently of the calling process. Methods exist to alter the security context in which a new processes runs.
