This guide is for the Browning A5 16 gauge only. Browning 12ga numbers began with the number 1 in 1903. The 16ga number 1 began in 1909. The two sets of numbers are different. This is an American Browning made by Remington. Just because it’s a round knob doesn’t mean it’s a Belgium. There are a few ways to tell that’s it’s an American Browning. 1. Serial number is on the side of the receiver. 2. Receiver has a bead blasted look on the top. 3. The engraving pattern.
1910 - 1924 - Bore in mm is over muzzle dimension. Prior to 1924 the gauge would be indicated within a diamond. Post-1924 - A 12-70 in an Omega lying is the gauge and chamber length in mm., and would indicate the gun is chambered for 12ga 70mm - 2 3/4" length shells. The Browning web site states that guns made from 1958-1967 should have a number in front of the "A" for aluminum receivers and "C" for steel receivers. My family has a Double Auto that my Grandfather bought new in 1961. It has a serial # of A1XXXX. I met a nice gnetleman at the Ohio Gun Collectors Assc. meeting in May.
23 posts · Joined 2004. #1 · Sep 22, 2004. I'm trying to date my dad's old (but very reliable) auto 5 20 ga. I can't find the serial number on the Browning website. Its a Belgian, with the number is "0Z" on the first line, then 39XXX on the second on the underside of the receiver. While I'll never let it go, I'm also interested in the value.

Browning A-5 serial numbers. Browning A5 number 8Z6877. Can't find the Z designation. Flat grip knob so, 1968. This gun's in excellent condition with no wood defects, original bluing totally intact. Butt with FN marking is slightly chipped, also has polychoke.
