Hello, My sister is soon going to be applying for colleges next year and we are wondering what schools will be most appropriate for her. Which schools (UC or CSU) are best for Marine Biology, not so much about the education but more about being interactive and get hands-on experience.

For example, most of the marine biology courses at U of Alabama-Birmingham are taught at the Dauphin Island sea lab, a facility shared by many other Gulf coast universities. By the way, I’m guessing that it is UAB that should be on that list. I don’t believe that there’s a marine biology/marine science program at U of Alabama-Tuscaloosa.
As an LAC fanboy, I usually keep my biases in check and do not recommend small private colleges when a poster is clearly aiming for large flagships (UF, UCF, FSU), but I’ll throw out a name anyway: Eckerd College in St. Pete. Cute college, literally right on the gulf with its own beach, and marine biology is a serious strength.
Wow. Your daughter and scenario sound a lot like mine (D23) from last year’s cycle. Very similar likes, wants, and stats. She was very undecided on Marine Biology (MB) or Environmental Science (ES). Marine Biology schools and options were more limited, most colleges have Environmental Science. Lot of great options already suggested in thread.
I studied marine science at Duke (more specifically, Earth & Ocean Sciences) and absolutely loved it. Most biology majors at Duke are pre-med and more interested in biochemistry and molecular biology, so undergraduates in ecology, marine bio, and environmental science get small classes, lots of faculty attention, and more resources than they can take advantage of.

Also, you should realize that the field of Marine Biology, Oceanography, Marine Sciences etc. is largely a graduate field of study. Don’t plan on getting a job in that field with just an undergraduate degree. The vast majority of such jobs require a graduate degree. If you love Marine Biology, by all means go ahead with an undergraduate ...
College Search & Selection. MPB2005 January 28, 2024, 12:09am 1. Ideas for great marine science/biology programs in the Mid-Atlantic or Southeast that offer good merit for OOS. DadOfJerseyGirl January 28, 2024, 12:26am 2. There’s pretty much no information here to allow anyone to guide you.
Lelamom March 25, 2024, 6:07pm 2. Several have heard back that posted here. There are only 25 spots. And typically receive 600 applicants for those spots. Priority goes to local kids. My d24 got into multiple t25 schools for marine bio but hasnt heard from calpoly which at this point means a rejection. Thats a pretty common occurrence at ...
The top five-six CSU’s would probably be Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona and San Jose State. Some schools may have a specialized emphasis/concentrations vs another school, that might be more of interest to you. For example, SLO’s biology major has these concentrations: Anatomy and ...
For zoology/ecology, I would especially add NC State, Oklahoma, and UC Davis – although again, less selective universities like Auburn, Washington State, Oregon State, Miami U, Humboldt State, Colorado State, Texas A&M, SIUC, U Maine, Oklahoma State, Wyoming, etc. are also very good. Hawaii is quite good at both zoology and marine biology.
.
