The NHS Nightingale Hospitals were seven critical care temporary hospitals established by NHS England as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in England. 24 August – The UK government announces that most hospital patients and care home residents in England will no longer be required to take COVID-19 tests, although new admissions into both will continue to be tested. Free lateral flow tests for health and social care staff will also end from 31 August.
A further 48,553 daily COVID cases are recorded, the highest daily figure since February 2021, but broadly in line with the estimates of 50,000 cases by 19 July.
