The first settler, in 1846, was Joseph Slaughter. A school was built there in 1849, a flour mill followed in 1875, and in 1878 15 buildings were constructed in Greencastle. [2] The Greencastle post office opened in August 1856 and closed in December 1901. [3] The population of Greencastle was 125 in 1887, [4] and was 42 in 1902. [5]

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, formally called Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, is a not-for-profit Catholic hospital located in Des Moines, Iowa. MercyOne Des Moines was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1893 and is the longest continually operating hospital in Des Moines.
Iowa County was formed on February 17, 1843. It was named for the Iowa River, which flows through the county. [4] The first courthouse was a log cabin built in 1847. This was rented by the county until 1850 when a second courthouse was completed. In 1861 construction of a third courthouse was begun.

The Independence State Hospital was built in 1873 as the second asylum in the state of Iowa. It is located in Independence, Iowa . The original plan for patients was to relieve crowding from the hospital at Mount Pleasant and to hold alcoholics, geriatrics, drug addicts, mentally ill, and the criminally insane.
