Diocletian's Palace should be a walking tour. The palace is very concentrated, so you won't have a bike or segway option. I didn't take a guided tour while I was there, but there are options for private guides in Rick's Croatia book. If you'd prefer a tour group (~20 people), there are tours going all the time and it should be easy to join a group.
We have a 6:45 AM flight out of Split to AMS, then to ATL. I figure we should be at the airport at least 2 hours prior to the flight, so I am thinking we should be picked up by 4:15 AM.
There is no main entrance, so to speak, where you purchase tickets. The only place you need tickets for is the basement. We hired a private tour guide, Maya Benzon, recommended by Rick Steves, for a tour of the palace and the old town. She was excellent! You understand so much more of the history of Split and the palace.
I recently was in Croatia taking the Krilo Catamaran from Dubrovnik to Korcula, Hvar and Split. I would recommend cutting Korcula to 2 nights and adding nights to Split. Split has a nice beach near Diocletian’s Palace called Bacvice. It’s about a 20-minute walk and has cafes, loungers, and showers.
Ill be in Split in late May 2024. I believe the port is basically walkable, but i think we might need tickets ahead of time for Diocletian's Palace, Cathedral of St. Domoninius, get into the crypts etc. Also any restaurant recommendations would be great too.
While in Split, we hired Maja Benzon for a 2-hour private guided tour of Old Town and Diocletian's Palace. She is recommended by Rick. Maja is from Split and is very knowledgeable, warm, and friendly. She is worth every penny. Definitely book Maja in advance if you choose to do this.
We love Split! I think it's a beautiful city architecturally and has a wonderful location on the Adriatic. I love the way the city developed in/around/through Diocletian's Palace. So interesting! We hired Maja Benzon, recommended by Rick, for a 2-hour private guided tour of Diocletian's Palace and Old Town. Loved the Ethnographic Museum.
The drive from Plitvice Lakes to Split is 3 hours. I don't see how you would have time to visit Plitvice in the morning, drive back to Split, and see Diocletian's Palace before you have to drive to the airport to catch your flight.
