Johnson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas.As of the 2020 census, its population was 179,927. [1] Its county seat is Cleburne. [2] Johnson County is named for Colonel Middleton Tate Johnson Sr., a Texas Ranger, politician and soldier in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War (fighting for the Confederate States Army). [3]
In 1856, the county seat was moved to Buchanan and a new courthouse was built, which survived until at least the mid-1860s. A two-story framed courthouse was planned but never constructed. When part of Johnson County was consolidated into Hood County the county seat was moved again, to "Camp Henderson" which was renamed Cleburne.
The first store, opened in 1882 by W. L. West, also housed the post office. By 1890, Joshua had a population of 300, two steam-powered corn mills and cotton gins, a hotel, a general store, and a newspaper, the Johnson County Record. Alvarado (/ ˌ æ l v ə ˈ r eɪ d oʊ / AL-və-RAY-doh) is the oldest city in Johnson County, Texas, United States.The population was 4,739 in 2020. [5]The community's first sheriff, A. H. Onstoott, is credited with naming Alvarado for Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico, where he fought in a battle during the Mexican–American War.
