Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.
It is traditionally seen as a way of getting closer to nature, often taking place in sanctuaries and orphanages. [60] The largest orphanage in Sri Lanka is Pinnawala, which, as of 2023, houses more than 90 elephants. Since their wild instincts remain, elephants must be broken and controlled to be able to work, be around humans, and give rides. [61]
