Benchmade makes some really awesome knives. Fit and finish has always been superb. Back when Emerson was the big thing I had a benchmade. I still have it and even though most of the black is worn off it is still just as solid as the day I got it. i am a real big fan of the classic nesmuk setup. Hatchet, sheath knife and swiss army folder.
Ended up with a Benchmade Bugout in S30V. Many stainless knives are a little soft for my liking, 60rc is my minimum, I was happy to find that the BO was 60.5rc for 3 readings. View attachment 1075531 I went to touch up the knife today before a bear hunt and quickly realized that S30V is not the easiest steels to sharpen.
Went and looked at a bunch of Benchmade knives at Cabelas today , I personally cant see the justification for the prices they ask. Crooked River , Crooked River mini , Bugout , Bugout mini , a few fixed blades from the hunting line. All nice looking knives but the price just doesn’t seem to reflect the product to me.
The Benchmade looks thinner especially at the hilt area, and I’m a little afraid of ordered without handling it first! Most knives feel too thin in the handle to me. I also found that round shape generally feel thinner than rectangular.
Benchmade knives are great knives that will serve you well. They do have some in the $200 & up range, but as others have said, they have lots of choices well under that too. For a production knife, they are top notch. Benchmade also typically has great customer service which is another plus for me. Zero Tolerance is another brand worth checking ...
The Benchmade knives I've had all ended up safequeens, and sold, they were quality, just not for me. It is hard to beat the good people, and warranty behind the ESSEE name. Plenty of other good quality knives to choose from, the decision will probably come down to personal preference.
Love mine. One of my very favorite knives. Top 3 for sure. I will make 2 comments that may be helpful: 1) The sheath sucks. Throw it away. I bought a Bark River pouch sheath and it is 10,000 times better. 2) The handle geometry is unique. It works for me and I find it quite comfortable. Other people find it uncomfortable.
Another anti-Benchmade guy here (reasons include gun control issues and their shameful treatment of Doug Ritter) but there's no denying that they manufacture some excellent knives. That 162 is a perfect example.
Benchmade also said that they are coming out with a better sheath and they said they will send me the better sheath once it is complete and available. In the meantime, I bought someone's old Spyderco Bushcraft sheath and the Benchmade 162 fits in it nicely.
I have knives in both D2 and s30v. Both will take a wicked edge. For me, both steels hold edges for crazy lengths of time. D2 doesn't have the over-all toughness as a super steel but holds its edge on par with them. D2 needs a microbevel as it is prone to micro chipping. D2 will get damage easier when contacting hard bone. Both are excellent steel.
