Jamukha was born in the Jadaran, a sub-tribe of the Khamag Mongol confederation, and was an anda (i.e. blood brother) to Temüjin.. According to The Secret History of the Mongols, when Börte, wife of Temüjin, and Sochigel, his step-mother, were abducted, by the Three Merkits; Wang Khan, Jamukha and Temüjin combined forces against the Merkits to recover Börte.
Temujin managed to rescue her, with the help of his friend Jamukha and the Keraite ruler Toghrul. As Temujin rose to power, Jamukha and Toghrul came to oppose him. [3] Their opposition culminated in an alliance of Jamukha's forces with the Keraite, the Merkit, and the Naimans. The Keraite were defeated in 1203. [4]
Toghrul was, like Jamukha, blood-brother of Temujin. He led the coalition against Merkits when Temujin's wife Börte was abducted in 1183, [9] joined by his brother Jakha Gambhu, Jamukha and Temujin. Two of the tribal chiefs, Dair Usun and Toqto'a fled the camp, probably informed by people who had seen the army move.
Although Temüjin and Jamukha were close friends for many years, they began to drift apart as time went on. Central to this split was the political system each of them supported—Jamukha held up the traditional Mongol aristocracy, whereas Temüjin believed that a meritocracy would be best.
