If you want to convert from English to metric units or from metric to English units, there is a simple way to do this that uses only one formula for each type of conversion. When you multiply any number by 1, that number stays the same. For example, 36 1 = 36.

Let's start with an example: A kilometer has 1000 meters, and an hour has 3600 seconds, so: 90 kilometers per hour × 1000 3600 = 25 meters per second. How did I know to make it 1000 3600 and not 3600 1000 (the other way around)? The trick is to do the conversions as fractions!
