Porter was platted in 1830. [1] A variant name was Pine Grove. [ 2 ] A post office called Porter was established in 1834, the name was changed to Porter in 1923, and the post office closed in 1959.
Porter Township was organized in the 1820s. It was named for Hon. Robert Porter, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who received from President John Adams a land grant in Delaware County. [4] Statewide, the only other Porter Township is located in Scioto County.
