The lake, opened on 16 August 2005, was created as part of the development of adjacent Hong Kong Disneyland Resort as a dual-purpose project for recreation and an irrigation reservoir. Penny's Bay or Chok Ko Wan (Chinese: 竹篙灣) is a bay in north-eastern Lantau Island, and had been a port since the Ming dynasty.
