St. Bede Abbey and Academy were founded in 1890 by six monks tasked with establishing a Benedictine teaching institution where young men could receive a Catholic education. [3] The school was dedicated on October 12, 1891 [ 4 ] as an all-boys boarding school , remaining as such until 1973, at which time it became a coeducational institution.

On January 12, 2012 the conference approved expansion for six schools to join the league beginning in the 2013-14 school year. Included in the expansion are Orion, Rockridge, Sherrard, Princeton, St. Bede Academy of Peru and Spring Valley Hall. The six additions make the Three Rivers a 15-team league, one of the largest in Illinois.

The Chicago Prairie Football League is a high school football only conference in northern Illinois.The conference participates in the Illinois High School Association.The conference includes five small public and three small private high schools, with enrollments between 150 and 950 students in Cook, DuPage, LaSalle, Livingston, and Will counties.
