The route was introduced in 2016 as a replacement for route 141. It operated between the same terminuses, Birmingham and Merry Hill Shopping Centre, but runs as an express service with a frequency of one bus every 20 minutes. National Express stated that this was in response to customer feedback. [1]

The route was operated by Birmingham City Transport until the formation of West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive (WMPTE) on 1 October 1969. In 1986, WMPTE's bus operations were taken over by West Midlands Travel who now operate as National Express West Midlands. The route is traversed annually by a cavalcade of vintage buses.
The route and bus pass operated in direct competition with National Express Coventry's 11, 11U and 12X services, which operated every 10 to 15 minutes with a fleet of similar-specification Enviro400 MMCs delivered during 2019, as well as their £125.90 term-long bus pass.
