The town includes the whole of Chincoteague Island and an area of adjacent water. The population was 3,344 at the 2020 census. [ 5 ] The town is a tourist gateway to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on adjacent Assateague Island , [ 6 ] the location of a popular recreational beach and home of the Virginia herd of Chincoteague Ponies .
Chincoteague Island. Chincoteague is the name of a town, and the barrier island on which it is located, on Virginia's Eastern Shore, in the United States. [1] The island is about 8 miles (13 km) long and 2 miles (3.2 km) wide. Sand forms its soil, with a thin layer of loam above it away from the water, enough to support pine trees and grass. [2]
On November 15, 1922, the causeway to Chincoteague Island was completed. Tolls were collected on the causeway until 1930. [6] The road between US 13 in Oak Hall and Chincoteague Island became a part of the state highway system as SR 520 in August 1928. [7] The route was extended onto Chincoteague Island in June 1930. [8]
The original plan for a causeway to link Chincoteague to the mainland was proposed by John B. Whealton, who formed the Chincoteague Toll Road and Bridge Company in 1919. The route originally proposed ran from Wallops Neck to the south end of Chincoteague, but was changed to bring the bridge to the center of town.

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a 14,000-acre (57 km 2) wildlife preserve operated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.It is primarily located on the Virginia half of Assateague Island with portions (only about 3%) located on the Maryland side of the island, as well as Morris Island and Wildcat Marsh.
