Harry Forster Chapin (/ ˈ tʃ eɪ p ɪ n /; December 7, 1942 – July 16, 1981) was an American singer-songwriter, philanthropist, and hunger activist best known for his folk rock and pop rock songs.
Founded in September 1975 by musician Harry Chapin [2] and radio host Bill Ayres, [3] WhyHunger began as a commitment between two friends and has grown into a global non-profit. [4] After Harry Chapin died in a car crash in 1981, family, friends, fans and the music community worked to ensure that WhyHunger lived on.
