The Mindanao State University–General Santos was created six years after the establishment of the Mindanao State University Main Campus Marawi City on September 1, 1961. It is one of the state universities of the Philippines with the aim of providing education for the different strategic locations across the island of Mindanao .
From a one campus university in Marawi, MSU has grown to a multi-campus university of eight autonomous campuses: MSU-Main in Marawi, MSU-IIT in Iligan, MSU-TCTO in Tawi-Tawi, MSU-Naawan in Misamis Oriental, MSU-Maguindanao, MSU-General Santos, MSU-Sulu in Jolo, MSU Buug in Zamboanga Sibugay, and MSU-Bataraza in Palawan. Following this event, the then mayor of Dinaig, Datu Odin Sinsuat, donated and sold a portion of his 55-hectare property, which now serves as the university's current campus. The Mindanao State University–Buug (MSU-Buug) was established in 1971 as MSU-Buug Community High School. It was subsidized by MSU-Marawi Campus from 1974 by virtue of BOR Resolution No. 1030. In 1982, the school was elevated to collegiate level and renamed as MSU-Buug College.

In 1984, MSU-TCTO Science High School and MSU-TCTO Child Development Center – Laboratory Elementary School were established. Republic Act No. 6060 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos established the MSU-Sulu College of Technology and Oceanography on August 4, 1969, initially offering degree programs and diploma in Fisheries Technology.
