The VF designation was one of the oldest in use by the U.S. Navy. From 1921 to 1948 it designated "Fighting Plane Squadron" or "Fighting Squadron". It designated "Fighter Squadron" from 1948 until 2006 when the last VF squadron was redesignated to Strike Fighter (VFA) squadron. [1] The designation has not been used since 2006.

Attack Squadron 85 or VA-85 was a long-lived Attack Squadron of the U.S. Navy. It was called to active duty as U.S. Navy Reserve squadron VA-859 on 1 February 1951 and redesignated VA-85 on 4 February 1953. It was disestablished on 30 September 1994, over 40 years later. The squadron's nickname from 1958-1994 was the Black Falcons.
Two of its crew survived. On the return to Bradwell Bay, Hall spotted a bomber that was caught in searchlights. He shot down this aircraft, a Junkers Ju 88 medium bomber, near Sellindge in Kent. This was the first time a No. 488 Squadron crew had shot down two aircraft in a single sortie and the feat was reported in a number of newspapers.

No. 85 Wing was formed on 10 March 1945 at RAAF Base Amberley as a heavy bomber wing. It commanded the B-24 Liberator-equipped No. 12 Squadron and No. 99 Squadron, as well as No. 31 Air Stores Park and No. 85 Operational Base Unit, until it was disbanded on 19 November 1945.
