[3] It was named "State Prison West"; as opposed to "State Prison East" which was the first state prison located in Jeffersonville, Indiana (and later moved to nearby Clarksville). [8]

The building's appearance is of a small castle, with a turret, fenestration with pointed arches, and crenellations across the front elevation parapet.
