Burke County is a county located along the eastern border of the U.S. state of Georgia in the Piedmont. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,596. [2] The county seat is Waynesboro. [3] Burke County is part of the Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC metropolitan statistical area.
Waynesboro is located in Burke County, one of the eight original counties of Georgia. The city was named after General Anthony Wayne, whose daring efforts during the Revolutionary War earned him the nickname "Mad Anthony Wayne". [8] Although European Americans lived in the area before the Revolutionary War, the town was not laid out until 1783.

Burke County Courthouse in Waynesboro, Georgia is a "carpenter Romanesque" (perhaps a vernacular Romanesque Revival) building completed in 1857. [2] It is one of just four courthouses in Georgia that were built in the 1850s and still serve as courthouses. [3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [1]
