Bloomington School District 87, often shortened to District 87, is a school district in Bloomington, Illinois. The district has six elementary schools, a junior high school, and a high school as well as a vocational school and an early education (PreK) school. In the 2014–2015 school year District 87 had 5615 total students and 703 employees.
The school's colors are purple and gold. The school dropped its mascot, a Native American chief head, in 2001 because it was deemed offensive. The school's students at that time voted not to replace the mascot but still called the Purple Raiders. Bloomington High School participates in the Big 12 Conference (Illinois).
It also covers parts of Bloomington [2] not in Bloomington Public Schools District 87. As of 2011, the district has around 13,000 students and 1,850 full- and part-time staff across 17 elementary, 4 junior high, and 2 high school buildings. [2] The two high schools are Normal Community High School and Normal Community West High School.
