Evergreen is an unincorporated town, a post office, and a census-designated place (CDP) located in and governed by Jefferson County, Colorado, U.S. The CDP is a part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1956, the Colorado State Highway Department opted to realign sections of SH 74 away from Bear Creek. A section of the road between Evergreen and Kittredge was resurfaced and widened the next year. [23] By then, US 285 replaced the eastern segment, and the terminus of the route was cut back to its original and current terminus in Morrison.

Near Mestaa'ėhehe Pass, the highway heads west along the upper end of Echo Mountain Ski Area. The highway then reaches an elevation of 10,000 feet at Echo Lake Park , [ 3 ] where it meets SH 5 . At this point, both SH 103 and SH 5 forms the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, [ 4 ] which is the highest paved road in North America.
